耳机音量过大会对听力造成损害。为此，欧盟出台了技术标准，对便携式播放器和耳机输出进行限制。手机、MP3、MP4、iPod、iPhone等便携式音频播放器和耳机出口欧盟，均须出具相关检测报告和证书。
现行的欧盟标准包括：
EN 50332-1:2000 Sound system equipment - Headphones and earphones associated with portable audio equipment - Maximum sound pressure level measurement methodology and limit considerations - Part 1: General method for "one package equipment 音响系统设备：便携式音频设备连接的头戴式耳机和耳塞式耳机 – 最大声压级测量方法和限值，第1部分：单一包装设备的通用方法
EN 50332-2:2000 Sound system equipment: Headphones and earphones associated with portable audio equipment - Maximum sound pressure level measurement methodology and limit considerations - Part 2: Matching of sets with headphones if either or both are offered separately 音响系统设备：便携式音频设备连接的头戴式耳机和耳塞式耳机 – 最大声压级测量方法和限值，第2部分：单独提供或同时提供时播放器与耳机的匹配
EN 50332-1规定了播放器和耳机搭配使用时的最大输出声压(Maximum Sound Pressure Level, SPL)，限值是≤100分贝。 EN50332-2规定了播放器和耳机各自的指标：播放器音频输出端口的最大输出电压(Maximum Output Voltage)，限值是≤150毫伏;耳机的宽带特性电压(Wide Band Characteristic Voltage)，限值是≥75毫伏。
